How does a WiFi QR Code work?
A WiFi QR code stores your network name (SSID), password, and encryption type. When scanned, most modern smartphones automatically connect to the network.
WiFi encryption (important)
The default encryption is WPA/WPA2 because it is the most common and secure option. You can change it if your router uses a different type.
- WPA/WPA2 → recommended (most home and business networks)
- WPA3 → newer, more secure (if supported)
- WPE → older, less secure
- None / Open → no password required
No password networks
If your WiFi network has no encryption (open network), you do not need to enter a password. The QR code will only store the network name.
How to find your WiFi encryption
You can check your network encryption using your device terminal.
On Windows (Command Prompt):
netsh wlan show interfaces
Look for Authentication (e.g., WPA2-Personal).
On Mac (Terminal):
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/Current/Resources/airport -I
Check the link auth or security field.
